About SunsetProof

SaaS products sunset all the time. When they do, thousands of teams need to act quickly: export deadlines approaching, vendor comparison pages that tend to favor their own product, and Reddit threads full of conflicting advice.

SunsetProof exists to fill that gap. We publish independent, detailed migration guides for SaaS products that are sunsetting. Each guide includes:

• Step-by-step data export walkthroughs
• Honest alternative comparisons (pros AND cons, not just features)
• Realistic migration timelines
• The gotchas vendors don't tell you about

Our methodology

Every guide on SunsetProof follows the same research process:

1. Verify the sunset. We confirm end-of-life dates from official vendor announcements, support pages, or press releases. No rumors, no speculation. If a date is unconfirmed, we say so explicitly.
2. Map the data landscape. We document what data the sunsetting tool holds, what export options exist (API, CSV, direct migration), and what deadlines users are working against.
3. Research alternatives hands-on. We sign up for free trials, read documentation, and test the migration path from the sunsetting product. We look at pricing tiers, feature parity, integration ecosystems, and real user reports from forums and review sites.
4. Score and compare fairly. We use a consistent scoring framework across alternatives. Each tool gets honest pros and cons. We highlight where free tiers are sufficient and where paid plans are necessary.
5. Keep guides current. Sunset timelines shift. Alternatives update their pricing. We revisit published guides and update them as the situation evolves.

How we pick what to cover

Not every sunsetting product gets a guide. We prioritize based on:

• User impact: How many teams are affected? Products with thousands of active users take priority.
• Migration complexity: If the migration path is obvious (just switch to the free version of the same tool), a full guide adds less value. We focus on cases where users genuinely need help choosing and migrating.
• Timeline urgency: Products with near-term shutdown dates get fast-tracked.
• Data risk: If users could lose critical data without action, we prioritize that guide.

We also maintain a SaaS Sunset Tracker that lists announced sunsets across the industry, even ones we haven't written full guides for yet.

How we make money

Some of our guides contain affiliate links. If you sign up for a tool through one of those links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This is how we keep the site running.

Affiliate relationships never influence our recommendations. We recommend tools we'd actually use ourselves, and we're upfront about the trade-offs of every option, including the free ones. If the best alternative is free and open-source, we'll say so.
